Parties of 6 to 10 guns, five pheasants or seven partridge per gun, lunch taken at the lodge. From 425 € per gun, excluding VAT. Pheasant shooting in France, a private day for your own party

Pheasant shooting in France is rarely sold the way it is here. Most days abroad are put together gun by gun, and you meet the rest of the line on the morning. This one is booked by the party: six to ten guns, one group, and 2,200 acres given over to you for the day. Nobody else is on the ground.

The format is a single day with no overnight stay, which matters more than it sounds. A party flying into Toulouse in the morning can be on the ground by half past ten and back at the airport by early evening, or fold the day into a longer trip in the south west. For a group that shoots together at home and wants something different once a season, it is a short trip with very little organising left to do.

Two thousand acres in the Tarn, walked up over dogs

The ground runs to 2,200 acres in the Tarn, roughly 1,700 acres of woodland and 500 acres of open plain, given over entirely to small game. It has been managed that way for more than twenty years, with continuous restocking work behind it, which is what makes a settled bird rather than one that has only just found its feet on the ground.

The shooting is walked up over dogs, on separate beats morning and afternoon. Your own gun dogs are welcome, and for guns arriving by air a pointer and handler can be arranged. Five pheasants or seven partridge per gun, or a mix of the two, are covered by the price. Beats worked in the morning are left alone in the afternoon, so the second outing is over fresh ground rather than over a line that has already been pushed once.

The lodge, and what a party does between drives

The shooting lodge sits on the estate and its large room seats at least fifty. Breakfast on arrival, lunch and the drinks at the close are all taken there, so nobody moves between buildings during the day. Table drinks come with lunch. Wifi and a sound system can be put in place if a party wants them, and some groups use the room for an hour of their own business before the shooting starts.

Non-shooting guests are properly catered for rather than tolerated, which is worth saying plainly. At 120 € excluding VAT each they have the lodge, the breakfast, the lunch and the end of the day, with no cap on numbers. A party of ten where six shoot works out without anybody doing arithmetic on the back of an envelope.

Getting a party from the UK onto the ground

Toulouse-Blagnac takes direct flights from a number of European cities, and the estate is 40 minutes by road from the airport. That is the whole reason a shooting day in France works as a day trip for a British or Nordic party rather than as a weekend that eats two days of travel at either end.

Two things need settling before you travel, and both are ours to sort out with you rather than yours to work out alone. Every gun needs a hunting licence valid for the current French season and hunting insurance, neither of which is included in the price. And firearms brought in from outside France follow a set procedure that depends on where the gun is resident. Raise both with us when you enquire, not the week before, and hire guns are available on the day at 50 € excluding VAT for anyone who would rather travel without their own.

A licensed agency organising your shooting day in France

Univers Chasse Peche has been organising guided hunting and shooting trips on four continents for more than thirty years. Agence licenciée Atout France n° 031950034, membre APST. Our office is in Toulouse and the estate is 40 minutes away, so the ground, the keeper and the state of the birds are known to us at first hand rather than through an intermediary.

For a party booking from abroad, that licence is not paperwork. It means the day is sold under French travel law, with a proper invoice for the party organiser and APST cover on the money paid up front. A 30 % deposit confirms the date, the balance is settled before the day or on arrival, and the shape of the day is agreed with you beforehand rather than handed to you on the morning.

Between 6 and 10. Six is the minimum the day is priced on, at 2,550 € ex. VAT for the party. Non-shooting guests can come in any number at 120 € ex. VAT each, which suits a group where partners or friends want the lodge and the lunch without the shooting.

Yes, the whole 2,200 acres are given over to your party for the day. No other guns, no other party. That is what allows the timings to be moved around to suit you and the beats to be worked twice, fresh ground in the afternoon.

A hunting licence valid for the current season and hunting insurance are compulsory for every gun. Neither is included in the price. A guest without a valid licence cannot shoot and joins the party as a non-shooting guest instead. Ask us early, not the week before.

Five pheasants or seven partridge per gun, or an equivalent mix of the two. The ground is prepared for your party in advance, on the beats that will be worked morning and afternoon, so the birds are settled and holding by the time you walk them.

Yes, your own gun dogs are welcome, any costs attached to them being yours. For guns travelling without a dog, a pointer with its handler is available at 60 € ex. VAT per gun, which is the usual arrangement for a party arriving by air.

It is collected at the end of the day and shared out between the guns, who take it home. Birds are handed over as shot, or plucked and drawn for a supplement agreed at the time of booking, depending on what the party takes.

In the Tarn, in south west France, 40 minutes by road from Toulouse and the same from Albi. Toulouse-Blagnac takes direct flights from several European cities, which makes this a day trip for a party flying in and out, or an easy add-on to a longer stay in the region.

A 30 % deposit confirms the date, the balance is settled before the day or on arrival. The day is then built with you: how long you want at the lodge, how much time on the ground, and where the non-shooting guests fit in.
