Pyrenean chamois hunting in France takes place on some of the most demanding mountain terrain in Europe. Known locally as the izard, this species has been pursued in the French Pyrenees for centuries. Our free-range ground in South-western France holds strong, well-managed izard populations across several thousand hectares of open mountain, between 600 and 1,800 metres of altitude. There are no fences and no put-and-take stock, only genuine spot-and-stalk in wild country.

Your day on the mountain

We recommend a minimum of [NOMBRE] full hunting days to give realistic odds on a quality animal. A typical programme runs as follows.

• Day 1, arrival: transfer from Toulouse-Blagnac to the hotel, rifle check and zero, briefing on the territory and the week ahead.
• Hunting days: pre-dawn departure, glassing of feeding groups at first light in the open grass fields, then a planned approach on the selected animal. Midday rest while the chamois lie up in dense scrub, second feeding window in the late afternoon, return at last light.
• Departure day: trophy paperwork finalised, transfer back to the airport.

The hunting method explained

The izard is hunted by spot-and-stalk. Outings begin just after first light, when the guide glasses multiple groups from distance and builds a picture of the available animals before committing to an approach. The terrain between the glassing position and the target is rarely straightforward, and the stalk is the heart of the hunt. Animals are typically spotted at long range, so hunters must be confident shooting prone, from a bipod or backpack rest, at distances between 100 and 300 metres. Our guides work to minimise the shooting distance without compromising the stalk, though open mountain conditions sometimes require a longer shot.

Practical information

• Species: Pyrenean chamois (izard), Rupicapra pyrenaica pyrenaica.
• Season: from mid-September to [end of January / end of February, À CONFIRMER], covering pre-rut, rut and late season.
• Best window: the rut in November, when mature males move openly across the ridges.
• Method: free-range spot-and-stalk.

Accommodation

Guests stay in a locally selected hotel experienced in hosting hunters throughout the season, with early breakfasts, packed lunches and late dinners arranged as standard. Non-hunting partners are welcome and can stay at the same hotel, with thermal spas, mountain villages, gastronomy and the city of Toulouse all within easy reach.
